The Loews Surf Dog Competition-Unleashed by Petco attracted hundreds of dogs and thousands of people to Imperial Beach Saturday.

Now in its eighth year, 40 surf dogs competed in big dog, little dog and tandem categories at the event organized by Loews Coronado Bay Resort.

Unlike years past, a large variety of events took place a short distance from the competition like a beer garden, food trucks, a dog park, on-site dog adoptions and massages and ice cream for dogs and their owners.

Tillman, an English bull dog with more than 20 million YouTube views perhaps best known for riding a skateboard, took first place in the big dog competition.

Tillman is also part of a TV show on Hallmark Channel and mascot of dog food maker Natural Balance.

A short ways away from the waves the award-winning sand sculpting team I.B. Posse created a sand sculpture, their second in the past two weeks. I.B. Posse will be back on the beach next week for the Sun & Sea Festival, an event which hopes to take the place of the now gone U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition.

All proceeds raised at the competition go to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
