A boy left at the scene of a wreck on Interstate 5 last week has died, officials told 10news.com.

His father, Angelo Fabiani Arroyo of Imperial Beach was arrested two days after the June 2 accident near Old Town, and charged with hit and run and child endangerment. Officials said he fled the scene and left passersby to come to his son's aid.

The boy, Valentino Fabiani Arroyo, 4, died at Rady Children's Hospital, but the exact time of his death was not disclosed, 10 News reported.

He was not expected to survive. At a Thursday court hearing, a family friend told reporters it would take "a miracle from God" for the boy to recover from his severe head injuries.

His mother, the station said, issued this statement in the wake of the boy's death: "I am deeply saddened that Valentino has passed away from injuries sustained in the auto accident. My precious angel Valentino will forever live on in the memory of those who were blessed to have met him or know him.”

Officials have said Arroyo, 40, has a drunk driving conviction. His bail is set at $150,000. He is next due in court Monday June 17.

In lieu of flowers the Valentino Fabiani Memorial Fund has been established.
