Sorry not true.... Up to about 100K everyone pays payroll tax, around 9%? the employers match theRead More 9% (this can be considered 18% as this is only paid on behalf of a worker and is a part of compensation). People up to 100K pay local taxes, and as the portion of their income for food and necessities is 100% of their pay (vs. a wealthy person who invests the money above their requirement) so while a Warren Buffett or Mitt Romney pay 13-14% (their payroll taxes are inconsequential), the poor guy at Starbucks pays a minimum of 25% in taxes. With property taxes, use taxes, gas taxes, etc. the lower tier of Americans pay a HUGE amount more percentage-wise then wealthy people... But the 3% own the papers, etc. so there you go!

It is quite clear Sister, that you don't understand the difference between "charity" whichRead More the Catholic Church is and has been a leader in the US and around the world. The church as a whole provides services by the generosity of its church members, NOT by the government, which if I am not mistaken doesn't give the Catholic church much of anything. And if you care to do the research ( I have) the percentage of persons getting some form of government assistance is approaching 50% thanks to unemployment which has gotten much worse under this administration. And if you take the time to look at the numbers, what Paul Ryan has suggested is to reform our current social security system (which those of us who work) pay into all our lives but only for those under the age of 50. The current retirement system was established when average life expectance was barely 60 (which is now 75+) and didn't provide for persons not a part of the legal work force not disability which we all know is "milked" by some for all its worth. Mr Ryan and most intellegent persons know stopping fraud and reform must happen to provide for the future retirees that have not reached the age of 50 yet. And one final word, just where does the donations come from to the church, It not government, it is to a large part the people who make over $250,000 a year and tithe big.

Great story!! Nice to read an article like this for a change. Get so tired of everyone's negativityRead More all the time.

This shows that most people are kind! Thank you for sharing this and thanks to those who helped theRead More dolphin.

Thank you IB Patch for sharing this story of local compassion :-)

Serge --- was going to comment on this response you wrote:Read More http://link.patch.com/view/4f36e4ef5a43876f5c8d1300504e4026dd6a49886b000049/1d8f2ebe but I can't seem to find it here ... Anyway, I wanted to ask about how it is you are allowed to surf in the sloughs and how many Dolphins there are are in the sloughs --- not off-shore in the open Pacific, but in the sloughs themselves ...

Hi Salinde: The costs of building a marina entrance in an area where 20 foot waves break duringRead More winter storms and the costs of annual dredging of that entrance would have been in the tens of millions of dollars. And I do understand that engineering constraints are often technical and financial--which meant that IB was a no go due to the high cost. No one was willing to pay the construction and permanent costs of a such a ludicrous project. And more than probably the IB marina idea was quite a bit lower on the "let's do it" scale for the U.S. than putting a man on the moon or building the Panama Canal.
Jon Hall September 9, 2012 at 08:46 pm
To Serge and all others --- I never said a damn thing about a Marina --- and that idiotic idea wasRead More abandoned long before the eco-terrorists took the sloughs No, what I was referring to was the fun all of us had in the Sloughs --- from the motorcycle races there (late 1950's --- put on by the Don Diegan Motorcycle Club - President George Hall) to the plethora of kids who learned to drive there, to the great fishing at the Mouth, the clamming, all the *dates* locals had there, and who could forget Eddie's 30th Birthday Party Yep, the sloughs were a very important part of life in IB ...

I'll be there, of course.

Its great to see how this event brings so many people together for a common cause: to celebrate theRead More river and highlight the need to continue its cleanup and restoration. Every time I'm down in the river valley I'm amazed by the wildlife; last week I saw a coyote walking by the community garden on Hollister St.

Good to clean it all up before the rains come to send it to the ocean.

"Off-leash dogs can wreak havoc, said Lisa Cox with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service." WhyRead More are dogs running this area off leash? BAD OWNERS Does Imperial Beach need a law enforcement person to write tickets until the DOG OWNERS are trained? If so, then increase the fine to pay for law enforcement. BAD DOG OWNERS disrespect our community, our sidewalks, greass areas and parks. HAVE THEY NO SHAME? None. And please don't give me the agrument about needing a dog park. Get your own yard for Fido to poop in.

"...Since 2008 WiLDCOAST has been at the forth front of the Marine Life Protection Act ...''Read More 'forefront'..forth front makes them 4th in line... one of those words that get overpowered by spellcheck ... very cool program and good to see they will take kids at 15....a high school science teacher should jump on this for their entire class...

Wow, I didn't realize this was an old article. I'm packing up my life here in Nor Cal and can't getRead More enough to read about IB! Want to add... Local support is crucial to a town's desirability! The new resident above made a suggestion that IB needs more bike racks. Yes, that's a smart and simple idea from a newcomer! She brings a fresh eye and she's invested! After 40 years up north (Santa Cruz, West Marin and the Sonoma County cities of Sebastopol, Bodega Bay and Petaluma), I too am so excited to soon be joining this evolving, vibrant, beach community. When's the next meeting?
Marina Andriola March 12, 2013 at 03:26 pm
Wow, love the IB passion! The one way corridor thru the biz and beachfront area is a great idea.Read More Libi, I so appreciate your posts, experience and knowledge; but I disagree about a traffic problem being created by switching to a one way street. I lived long term in three towns where a two way downtown street was made into one way street with the extra lane turned into diagonal side by side parking. People drove slower, found parking on the first pass through and could enter/exit street parking with more visibility and safety. Walking became a pleasure, cruising and racing through town at night became impossible, businesses were able to thrive, and a vibrant area for visitors and locals was created. Antique shops, dress stores, shoe stores, theaters, gourmet delis, bakeries, health food stores... all found success in this pedestrian and parking friendly environment. The waterfront of IB is spectacular. The developers can't believe that this virgin of a town is still acting like a rebellious teenager. All beauty, mixed messages and conflicted emotion makes you ripe for exploitation. IB can be better than it is without losing its soul. Support the wonderful friday farmers market. Educate and encourage recycling. Look at successful beach towns and consider what goes on in them. IB does not have to become just another So Cal hot mess on the beach to be a success in tourism.

Lack of volunteers was an easy way out for the Sandcastle Competition Committee. There are lots ofRead More volunteers out here! If I had known this I would have stepped up and organized the whole thing! Or why didn't the City of Imperial Beach pay someone to run it or even The Chamber of Commerce? With as much revenue it brought to IB you think it would have been worth it to them. So Sad......

gay soldier, you must have not gotten the memo, " you people" has now been deemedRead More politically incorrect hate speech. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/07/did-ann-romney-say-you-people-the-road-argument-at-a-truck-shop-boehner-on-bachmann-rubios-anti-pledge-drive/ But it's tough to keep up with who you are insulting these days.

James, i meant "you people" as in the ones filled with hate..

hmmm, so i guess every boss i've ever had was a bully since they didn't think i should get paidRead More unless i actually showed up and did work that they deemed necessary. my parents were huge bullies, they used to make me eat lima beans when my own "personal view" was that ice cream was better for me. so if these people have no "right" to do this than clearly i have a lawsuit on my hands stemming from an infringement of my personal rights, correct? now if i could only find a lawyer to represent me... wait by the above definitions, i guess lawyers are some of the biggest bullies of them all. good grief!!
LT June 26, 2012 at 01:47 am
quit being such a bully, you big bully!

Three weeks after our RELAY for LIFE and I still can't find the words to express what RELAY meant toRead More me this year.. I've met some new lifetime friends. I've learned that a new found lifetime friend has brain cancer.. She's in for the fight of her life and God willing she'll be okay. I learned that we -- the Imperial Beach Relay for Life surpassed the funds raised in any past year... To date - we raised more than $21,000.00... and we're still accepting donations and this past Sunday compelted our final fundraiser for 2012.. so this figure isn't quite final...
