'...We also reunite thousands of lost children with their parents, perform first aid, patrol onRead More rescue boats and perform cliff rescues....' ...and lifeguards have to bury the dead seals that wash ashore...at least that's what they tell the ib lifeguards...

'...I was bummed that I did not get the overwhelming sponsorship support I thought I would afterRead More winning the World [Championship]...' she should have ripped her shirt off like the female soccer player did after a goal... golf tournaments used to get flack for using tobacco sponsors, but it was the only sponsors they could get at the time.....it's a shame that so much money is throw into a few sports while the others struggle....

Proper nutrition is not important to athletes in vulnerable communities.
Barbara Yost May 4, 2013 at 02:52 pm
I fail to see what food stamps have anything to do with the Olympics.
Mary May 1, 2013 at 12:01 am
TIL - I nominate you for "Christian Humanitarian" of the Year. I guess you think itRead More better to let children die of malnutrition. Again not on topic as usual.

Erika, You son sound's like a fine young man, I am one of those retired guiy's. I have all of theRead More tool's that he would need for his chicken coop and room and a garage full more and would be glad to teach him the safe and effective use of them. I am also looking for a young person for yard work, I have all the tool's for that also, LOL ! I pay well if an honest effort is put forth. I put my phonne on your site so have him call me if he is interested. Thats at least one we can hopefully keep busy !
Serge Dedina April 25, 2013 at 01:06 pm
Ed--one of the reasons I and other surf dads make sure that the IB surf kids do water polo andRead More swimming is because starting at the age of 16 they can get either pool or ocean lifeguard jobs. At age 16 they can lifeguard with the State of California and start close to $15 per hour. My oldest son Israel is 17 and will be attending the State Lifeguard training in Huntington Beach in June.

kids 18-25 can work in the national parks...room, board, and wages for the summer... the resortsRead More hire kids to work the beaches and as bell hops......and there's the del mar fair that will need so much help for 3 weeks that they will hire everyone that applies for a job....

Dickson you are so in the dark. What part of the city has done zero do you not understand?ForRead More decades this has been a continuous nightmare. You feel that we at the sports park are bully's? yet we have for so many years took time out of our personal lives and, cut the grass, paint , build ect... all for FREE!!!. The city has done little to nothing down at the fields and, complex. it is sad that people are unaware that so much is done by volunteers and, that the city is useless for so many years. money spent on bs and, not the kids of the community. You are right when you say the kids don't vote, but they are our future and, the most important natural resource we have, if we let them down we burn our selves in the process. think about it, before you spew nonsense.
Guy Nelson April 21, 2013 at 09:26 pm
Don, I can only hope your bully tactics are soon at an end. It's not just about the kids, it's aboutRead More everyone. Those kids don't even vote. It's time the parents start paying the bill for little league. I know of no other City that gives a free ride for the use of their facilities. I cannot wait for the Y or whoever takes over to put an end to the psychotic management of the sports park.
Bob O'Neal April 19, 2013 at 09:10 pm
I spent 10 years as the President of IBLL (early 80's to early90's) The city worked well with us atRead More that time. What happened? These fields were originally deeded to the city for use by kids for baseball and softball fields. IBLL took care of these fields without any help from the city during my tenure. Why won't they negotiate with IBLL and softball programs? Sounds like too much politics to me. These two youth programs could take care of their fields.... let YMCA have the Sports Park building and Skate Park if need be, but leave those fields alone.

I have a way to save the sports park ! Don't waste $30,000 on head hunters to find a new cityRead More manager. Don't waste $70,000 on new lights for Seacoast. Using the old math and no calculator that's $100,000. Problem solved.....
IBborn&bred April 17, 2013 at 07:22 pm
You are right about no commission ever being taken seriously...by city council. The Mayor has theRead More final say in who would serve as a member of the Parks and Rec's Advisory Committee. That board would just be made up of people who are squares, just like them.
Libi Uremovic March 20, 2013 at 08:24 pm
'...the problems at the park will get better ...' there are no problems at the sports park exceptRead More that it is not supported by the city... let's be very clear - there are no crimes, lawsuits, excessive expenses, or any reason for the city to close the sports park... the government has made it clear it doesn't want to provide services for the people - which means all of our tax dollars go to wasteful spending at the top... the people have two choices - remove the kids from this city or remove the government from this city... the government has taken their stand - all for them and nothing for the people...
Surf Cali March 18, 2013 at 02:14 pm
Well then I guess we agree on one thing. The "City" and "government" in generalRead More are Incapable of running anything. I personaly feel the YMCA will do a better job, than continuing to do the same thing and expecting a different result. There is room down there for more than just Baseball and Softball. We have a "Program Director" and No "Programs". So are we just fighting to keep it the same because we fear change? I agree with you about the under lying problems with the city. But my thought is the problems at the park will get better by the city getting out of the way, and let the free market decide. Not people holding on to power.
Tim O'Neal March 18, 2013 at 01:48 pm
Thank you...and you just helped me make my point. Your not as obtuse as I thought. The deal withRead More YMCA has absolutely nothing to with "increasing programs for everyone". It's all about money! It's not about the City's inability to put "MORE MONEY" into the Sports Park...it's about the City's alleged inability to provide "ANY MONEY". (As seen by the proposed budget presented to City Council on March 6th. No deal finalized with YMCA, and Sports Park already unfunded) The City owns the land and structures at Sports Park. But a majority of the land at Sports Park was deeded to them by a very generous family with the conditions that 1. the land always be a "park", and 2. if at any point the City decided they no longer wanted a "park" on this parcel, the deed to the land would be reverted back to the original family. So, if we are to believe that the City is so bad off that not a even a single dollar can be allocated for the Operations and Maintenance of Sports Park, then the only way to keep from having to give the land back to the original owner, is to find somebody willing to "operate and maintain" the park at no cost to the city. That's where the Y comes in...it's their willingness to "operate and maintain" the Sports Park at no cost to the City, regardless of programs. There is no disputing that the YMCA provides an extensive assortment of quality programs and services across the United States. But that's not why the City wants to give them the keys.

As a kid raised surfing La Jolla, I remember another surfer/schoolmate telling me, a good surfer canRead More surf any board, any wave. That saying has stuck with me since I was a kid. The guy that told me this is one of the best longboarders in the world.

the work shop is the 11th which is Thursday , not Wednesday. Anyhoo love to see everyone there toRead More support our leagues and, our young skate boarders as well as our IB small businesses that can and, will be effected by this potential move from the city to the YMCA.
Libi Uremovic April 7, 2013 at 06:39 pm
and i gotta say - the ball fields shocked me....those are the most well-kept ball fields i've everRead More seen....probably the nicest thing in town.....the ymca will never maintain the ball fields at the same standard that they're maintained now....
Libi Uremovic April 7, 2013 at 06:16 pm
i just walked through the ball fields and skate park...there's 14 kids in the skate park...a coupleRead More little kids on scooters and the rest looked 12-15 years old....one adult sitting there, but one adult is all it takes... watching the kids skate really drove home how insulting it is for adults to dismiss what the kids are doing... skateboarding is an advanced sport in today's world and the kids are training themselves ... they're focused, they take turns and go in order, and the big kids were watching out for the little kids... the only problem i see is that the rec center should be open on sundays ..

Just depends on where the swell is coming from and the wind. For example on Oahu, the west side isRead More almost always offshore and swells can come multiple directions. The east side tends to be blown out. Waves are produced by wind. And the extreme ends of the earth generally produce the largest storms--hence surf.
Erika Lowery April 3, 2013 at 06:48 pm
I believe the west coasts are better because of the jet stream making better waves. The east coastRead More has splashes... LOL I never would have thought about BC. That is interesting idea and sounds beautiful.
Libi Uremovic April 3, 2013 at 02:39 pm
serge - is there a difference in west coasts of countries/islands verses east coast or north orRead More south for the best surfing...? is there a difference or pattern in the waves based on the turning of the planet or placement in the hemispheres, or is it 'all good'....?
Blayk Hawbaugh March 28, 2013 at 04:55 pm

It makes zero sense Greg. At the first meeting the Little League had with the City, attended byRead More Janney, Brown, and Wade, a board member asked why LL and the skatepark were all of sudden going to be charged fees when they barely cost the City anything to run, we were told the fees were going to help support the programs and services INSIDE the Rec. Just like the story Serge tells about Janney's true feelings about surfers.
James Coates March 21, 2013 at 11:54 pm

James Coates March 21, 2013 at 11:45 pm
James Coates 6:19 pm on Thursday, March 21, 2013 To all concerned: What I heard said lastRead More night from the city council was that the Y would be the best for the citizens of IB. I did not hear the citizens agree. What we need to do is to meet as a group & come up with plan to make it work. WE NEED A COMMITTEE TO OVERSEE PARK ON A ONGOING BASIS. This committee needs to be able to write grants, find sponsers & more. We need to include people who currently use any aspect of the facility (gym, skate, fields, etc) We need to be open to new ideas for use of all Park. We need to meet before meeting with City & come up with a propsal of our own with how to generate revenue & keep cost down for the people of IB. One idea is to have sponsers on scoreboards in the park & in the gym. Some facilities have a sponser for the whole facility with sign out front. There could be sponsers noted on light poles. We can use volunteers to staff the facility & oversee the skate park. The leagues have been very successful with volunteers. This is just a start of ideas. There needs to be citizen involvement & oversight of the process. I belive this is the best solution. The City said they'd pay for some of electrical, will be adding improvements to gym floor & roof & would do the same with the snack bar if the Y takes over. We can ask for the same amout where we feel it is needed Tell me what you think. Thanks for all your support for the youth of IB. Jim

Sammy March 16, 2013 at 05:15 am
From what I hear Paul Paquin, a 2 time New York State champ and national champion, has been anRead More assistant coach over there this year. Is that true? If yes, then that must have been a contributing factor to the success of the team this year.

Watch Stockton, CA go through bankruptcy. Whether federal bankruptcy law trumps the California lawRead More that requires pension fund debts to be honored above all could have huge implications across the state. The public employee pension and healthcare benefit gravy train might finally be coming to a well deserved end. Personally, I'm tired of seeing people who have misfiled paperwork and swept sidewalks for twenty years get more money than our service members who risked their lives for 20+ years and who didn't get to go home every afternoon at 3 pm.
sofia bayardo March 13, 2013 at 11:08 pm
We moved here because it. Looked like a great place to raise our son. We have been here for yearsRead More now and are starting to wonder if we made a mistake. It is not any specific issue, it is that our elected official prefer to do back room deals, and do not have enough respect for its residents to include them prior to decisions being made. Decisions that will affect all of our lives.
Lucia Johnston March 12, 2013 at 12:58 pm
Wasted taxes? Seems like there is a lot of wasted space, wasted time and wasted people in I.B. I'mRead More just pointing out the way Perris Rec manages their City Events compared to the way I.B. manages their events. No I.B. is not Perris California but it could sure use a few lessons on how to run an excellent Recreation Center like Perris California or any other small town in Cali'. Seems like there is an "our way or no way" attitude here in I.B. Everyone talks about all the future hotels, lights, Seacoast improvements bringing in more income yet you are saying we need to remove the future debt burden on the children by doing away with what little they have now. That's steeling from their piggy bank. Better to cut the pork fat off of City government.
James Coates March 8, 2013 at 05:41 pm
Tim want to thank you for all you do to be the vicoe of the I.B. youth. The letter was right and toRead More the point. Thanks, Jim...
Tim O'Neal March 8, 2013 at 01:42 pm
As of this comment, Councilmemebers Bilbray and Patton acknowledged my letter and thanked me for myRead More input.
Serge Dedina March 8, 2013 at 12:50 pm
Excellent letter Tim. The greatest asset of our city is our community. The role of our cityRead More employees should be to work with residents to improve the quality of life in our community. I think we are finally seeing the final act of disconnecting the city administration from our community. There appears to be little concern at all by the top city staff for the well being of our children and families in Imperial Beach.
