Vote Now for IB's Senior Citizen of the Year

Local Kiwanis Club will honor the winner at their June 23 Senior Appreciation Day.

What makes a good volunteer? Are they giving? Kind? Understanding and personable?

Six local women have been nominated by members of the communtiy for their work helping others and your vote cast here or at the IB Senior Center will decide who is earns the title of Outstanding Community Senior Citizen of the Year.

All votes must be cast by June 18.

The winner will be honored at the Imperial Beach/South Bay Kiwanis Club's , which will be held at June 23 from 2-4 p.m. 

All local seniors are invited to attend Senior Appreciation Day to enjoy live music, free food and a Hawaiian/beach themed celebration.

There will also be games and prizes, and eight to 10 vendors from local businesses will be at the event to give out information, among other things.

To be nominated, the person should be at least 55-years-old, reside in Imperial Beach or the South Bay and must have given their time, talent or treasure to support people who live in IB.

Nominees have done one or more of the following:

  • Volunteer in the community
  • Share their knowledge with others
  • Promote an active living lifestyle and are passionate about what they do
  • Smile and spread the joy of helping others
  • Active advocates of seniors and others
  • Dedicated in helping make our community a safe place for seniors and everyone

Between May 24 and June 5, readers nominated two outstanding seniors on IB Patch, and 12 nominations were submitted at the Imperial Beach Senior Center.

Votes cast here on IB Patch and at the Imperial Beach Senior Center will determine who receives top honors at Senior Appreciation Day later this month.

Here are this year's nominees:

- Melanie Ellsworth, works with the South Bay Union School District Education Foundation and

- Joanne Norden for her coordinating activites at and operating the Imperial Beach Senior Center

- Edith Simpson, a member of the IB Senior Center who helps with "Stretch and Flex" classes and an active member of St. James Lutheran Church, Fleet Reserve Association Branch 289 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5477

- Pat Duncan, president of the IB Senior Center who helps with stretching exercises

- Dottie Forgie, IB Senior Center volunteer

- Chris Brown, for her work with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department's volunteer patrol officers and the South Bay Union School District Board of Trustees
