Experience Christmas Eve 7pm @IB United Methodist Church

Christmas will soon be here.

As I talk with people, I hear a common line saying “I can’t believe it is Christmas time already.”  Our elders told us as we grew older the years would go by faster and faster.  It seems to be true.  The year spins around quickly.  And here we are again at Christmas.

With the holiday, come traditions.

Traditions for Christmas vary from family to family.  For some, it centers on the gifts.  How exciting it is when especially little ones get to tear through the wrapping paper to discover the toy they had been hoping for, maybe even told Santa they wanted.  For some, it may center on a meal where the family gathers.  One family I spoke with plans to take a bike ride through the estuary and catch a movie in the afternoon.   There are many other ways people celebrate the holiday.

Whatever your tradition might be, I pray it gives you a chance to reconnect with family and friends, to relax and enjoy the day.

One tradition observed by some is to attend a Christmas Eve worship service.  This can be a special and powerful experience.  It can help remind one of the “reason for the season.”  And there is something mysterious and inviting about a dark cool night lit by candles.

At the Imperial Beach United Methodist Church, there will be a Candlelight Communion Service on Christmas Eve at 7pm.  In this hour long worship service, there will be familiar carols and scriptures read.  I will speak about significance of the story about the birth of Jesus in our lives.  Holy Communion will be celebrated.  As custom in the United Methodist Church, everyone can receive Communion.  You do no need to be a church member, or even a Christian.  Just be you!  And at the end of the service, we will walk to the church courtyard where we will light individual candles while singing Silent Night.

It is a powerful worship experience for a most holy night.

I invite you to make Christmas Eve worship a part of your holiday tradition this year.

And to all the wonderful people of Imperial Beach, Merry Christmas!
