Superfrog Triathlon Honors Fallen SEALs

The Superfrog race fell on the 10th anniversary of the attacks on New York and Washington, D.C., and featured memorial banners for the fallen.

The 33rd Superfrog Triathlon, in Coronado and Imperial Beach on Sunday, saluted Navy SEALs who were killed in the War on Terror.

To celebrate their lives and mark their losses, race organizers raised funds to create banners for the 71 men who have died, a total that includes in Afghanistan.

“Sadly, we went from honoring 49 of our own to 71,” said Hall. He added, “Hopefully we will never lose another SEAL member again, but it's important that we pay tribute to their sacrifice and raise money to benefit their families. Any individual or business that would like to provide sponsorship support is greatly appreciated.”

Elizabeth Schaefer, 30, of Coronado, was among the top finishers in the women's division, placing third. Emily Finanger of San Diego placed first, followed by Kathy Rakel of Litchfield Park, AZ.

Jozsef Major of Phoenix finished first in the men's division, followed by Lars Finanger of San Diego and Max Biessmann of Irvine.

The Superfrog triathlon began in 1978 as training to prepare SEALs for the famed Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii. It also is intended to encourage the sport in the Navy's Underwater Demolition and SEAL teams, which train in Coronado.
