Spearfishing Off Imperial Beach

IB locals Nate Scharr and Ken Giffords share their underwater spearfishing adventures.

The retired World War II submarine, the SS-142, would have been sunk out at sea and used for target practice if it hadn't broke tow and sunk on Feb. 20, 1945, off the coast of the "Elephant Fence" Naval Radio Receiving Facility, just north of IB.

Today, it's home to Garibaldi, the California state fish, California spiny lobster, and sandbass, calico bass, sculpin, whitefish, and kelp fish.

"If you're going to shoot a fish that's 12 inches, it better look 18, otherwise the Department of Fish and Game is going to get you," said spearfisherman Ken Giffords.

Giffords recommends that people familiarize themselves with the DFG regulations before spearfishing. For current DFG regulations, visit the DFG website.
