San Diego Surge Women's Football Advances the Ball

Many of the all-female owners and players of the Women's Football Alliance League are mothers and college students. And based on the injury count, these women hit hard.

Starting as a grassroots league 15 years ago, the Women's Football Alliance has grown to more than 50 teams nationwide. The owners play on the field and run the organization.

Imperial Beach resident Traci Alexander plays for the San Diego Surge, a Women’s Football Alliance team. The Surge is a new team with most of the players, including Alexander, having played previously on the Sacramento Sirens team.

The southwest region that the Surge plays in consists of teams from Los Angeles, Las Vegas, the Bay Area, and Tempe, AZ.

There are eight games a season with a championship game at the end. Most women range in age from mid 20s to mid 30s. Some women are right out of college while others are working professionals and mothers. The Surge team doctor is female as well. Trainers are a part of the team as well and are onsite during practice and the games.
