Young surfers from around San Diego came out Sunday for Katy's Endless Summer Grom Surf Classic in Imperial Beach.
Now in its second year, the event is organized by Katy Fallon, owner of .
More than 75 surfers registered to compete in six categories 16 and under.
For a new tradition started this year, a surfboard painted by artist Terry Gillard will be hung on the wall of the cafe year round and will include the womens' division winner and the oldest surfer to win first in any division.
The event nearly doubled in size from last year, and 40 competitors were signed up before it was even advertised and had to be capped at 75.
With 16 competitors mostly from Imperial Beach and Coronado, the women's division was the largest of the competition. Nearly every top winner in that category came from the Coronado Middle School surf team.
The surf contest was first named as the warm up for the Dempsey Holder Surf Contest held every fall, but will now be its own event.
"It's not a warm up any longer and endless summer is just sort of a motto to live life by," she said.
The silhouette on contest t-shirts is from a photo of Fallon and a friend on a cliff during a two-month long surfing trip across Mexico in 1980.
"That was our endless summer," she said.
Weather cleared up, water quality was good in between general advisories and beach closures and "the kids were so gracious and excited," she said.
The event's judges were Greg Broadfoot, Dave Pascqual, Matt Fields, Kevin Farris, Mary Ellen Rodgers, Kat Salinsky, Sean Fowler and Jeff Bragg.
"I couldn't have done this without Manny, the sponsors and the other judges," Fallon said.
Manny Vargas and Fallon's son Joey instructed surfers to enter and exit the water.
Attendees received Seven Mile hand painted t-shirts, a Manny Vargas photo session, hand painted trophies by artist and surfer , Electric sunglasses, , Natural Selections Surfboards, , Skull Candy headphones and Oakley. Local restaurant was also a sponsor.
