Gallery: Mariners Claim 3rd League Championship; Headed to Playoffs

The school's varsity football team earned their third Metro South Bay championship Friday with a perfect 4-0 record in league play.

The Mar Vista Mariners trounced their neighboring rival Southwest Raiders Friday 63-14 to keep The Bell in Imperial Beach for another year. The win was locked up early on, with a 49-6 score by halftime.

The tradition of The Bell dates back to the 1980s, when coaches from both teams found the old ship bell in a scrap yard.

After a rocky 1-3 start, Mar Vista High School varsity football finished the season with a six-game winning streak and the South Bay Metro League championship for the third straight year.

Due to a fight that broke out near the field and behind the home bleachers minutes before the end of the game, post-game celebrations and a dance were canceled.

Playoff standings and match-ups will be determined by CIF San Diego officials Saturday morning. First round games will be played Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.
