IB Stingrays Beat Dead Rabbits for Rugby Championship

This is the Imperial Beach Stingray's first championship since joining Southern California Rugby Football Union play three years ago.

In a close game Saturday in Apple Valley, the Imperial Beach Rugby Club Stingrays defeated the Dead Rabbits Rugby Club 35-28 to win the Division IV Southern California Rugby Football Union (SCRFU).

This season marked the Stingray's first trip to the playoffs.

Both teams entered the league three years ago, according to the Victorville Valley Press

With a 7-1 record, the Dead Rabbits were the #1 seed in the playoffs this season. Both teams took away a win and a loss when they faced each other in two matches during the regular season.

After an 0-2 start, the Stingrays rebounded and finished the season with a 5-3 record, outscoring opponents 130-20.

The win means the team can move to Division III play next season, said Coach Ignacio Montero.

Montero told IB Patch a focus on defense and nimble offense kept the team competive and at the top of their game at the end of the sason.
