Battle by the Beach to Feature Bud Harbin Award

Battle by the Beach, a tournament hosted by the Imperial Beach Predators youth wrestling team, will become Bud's Battle by the Beach next year in honor of founder Bud Harbin.

About 20 teams from San Diego and Imperial counties will come together at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at Mar Vista High School for the Battle by the Beach.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the tournament ($7 for adults, $5 for kids) hosted by the Imperial Beach Predators youth wrestling team that features five to 14 years old.

The tournament was started 14 year ago by Bud Harbin, who passed away Oct. 31, said coach Mike Woods.

This year a top player will be awarded the Bud Harbin award.

"This is basically a coaches award that will be voted on by all head coaches and will be given out to a wrestler for their great attitude, sportsmanship, and all around effort," Woods said.

Longtime wrestling coach Levi Harbin will present the award.

Next year the name of the tournament will change to Bud's Battle by the Beach "in honor of Bud Harbin's relentless efforts and dedication to excellence."

In addition to supporting young athletes, Harbin was a mainstay with IB civic groups, served two terms on the Imperial Beach City Council, supported the Boys & Girls Club of South County and was part of a group that created the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition.
