With the Sandcastle Competition Gone, Education Foundation Seeks Fundraising Ideas

The foundation is also looking for new members to help raise money for various programs that benefit local teachers and students.

The South Bay Union School District's Education Foundation is looking for ideas to help raise money for programs they provide that benefit local teachers and students.

By parking cars at schools near the beach, the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition brought in more money than any other fundraiser the group holds every year.

According to president Dana Tomlinson, in 2011, of more than $40,000 raised from August 2010 to August 2011, more than $14,000 came from parking cars two days.

"With the sandcastle competition parking gone, new ideas are needed," said foundation member Mary Parsons said at a Board of Trustees meeting last month.

New members are also sought to help run the foundation.

"We're fun and we're not one of those monied boards. it's mostly blood, sweat and tears," Parsons said.

Without the sandcastle competition, Stars Under the Stars, now in its second year, is the foundation's largest fundraiser.

Stars Under the Stars will be held April 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel in National City.

Tickets are available for $40 a person and include complimentary parking, for d'oeuvres, dinner, prizes and live music from The Teagan Taylor Trio.

Must be 21 and older to attend.

A special $79 room rate is available for attendees.

Donations are being sought for raffle prizes. To buy a ticket to the event or join the foundation, email Mary Parsons at mparsons7@cox.net or call 619-575-9060

The foundation's next meeting will be held March 6 at 5 p.m. at district offices on Elm Avenue. Meetings are typically held the third Tuesday of every month at district offices at 6 p.m.
