Sweetwater to Continue iPads for Students Initiative

The iPad program will continue after a close 3-2 vote by the Sweetwater Union High School District Board of Trustees. Opponents of the program say the money is needed to keep teachers in the classroom.

After giving iPads to more than 5,000 seventh-graders at the start of the school year, the Sweetwater Union High School District School Board decided to continue a program to bring tablets in the classroom at their April 9 meeting.

The student mobile device initiative first approved by the board last year was approved again with a 3-2 vote, with Board Members Pearl Quinones and Bertha Lopez dissenting.

People who oppose the initiative say the money is needed elsewhere. At the same meeting, the school board voted to make cuts to adult education, ROP and CTE.

Quionones estimates it would cost roughly $3 million for the district to keep the adult and vocational offerings in the coming school year.

Sweetwater will spend $4.74 million for the next three school years to supply students and teachers with iPads, the district said.
