SBUSD Celebrates South Bay Parent Volunteers, Child Nutrition Services

The South Bay Union School District recognized employees and volunteers who help serve students at their board meeting last week including the Reachout to Families Resource Center at Central Elementary School.

Proclamations were given to parent volunteers and more than 60 child nutrition employees at the start of the South Bay Union School District's Board of Trustees meeting held April 18.

Child nutrition workers serve near 10,000 meals a day to students across the school district, according to the department's director Sara Mosburg.

"Our amazing staff, in whatever capacity they work, are very dedicated to the students of the South Bay," she said.

Included with meals child nutrition employees serve each week are 300 lbs. of spinach, 200 lbs. of brocoli and 9,800 cartons of milk, Mosburg said.

Community Volunteer Coordinators from schools throughout the district's schools were also celebrated. Community Volunteer Coordinators are parents who do outreach for volunteers, look for ways to help students and try to bridge a gap between services available from the district and families in need.

Only part of the work they do is seen, said Student Services director Erin Lain.

"They also do a lot of behind the scenes things, whether it's distributing backpacks to foster students… or coordinating gifts for needy families during the holidays," Lain said.

Reachout to Families Resource Center and its former coordinator were also recognized for the work they do for parents and families in the school district.
