SBUSD Board of Trustees Approve $58 Million Budget

The South Bay Union School District Board approved the district's 2011-2012 budget last night, meaning that 30 district employees who had previously received pink slips will officially be reinstated.

In a meeting lasting less than 10 minutes from start to finish, the South Bay Union School District (SBUSD) Board of Trustees voted 4-0 to approve the 2011-2012 budget. School Board President Chris Brown did not attend.

District Director of Fiscal Services Arlene Mitchell was the only one to speak, laying out how the district plans to deal with a budget gap.

“The total projected general fund revenue in 2011-2012 is $54,110,158, but our projected expenditures and transfers out is $57,990,367, leaving a budget gap of $3,790,209,” she said. “But this can be made up through one time resources which include a revenue limit enhancement of $1,869,000, a mandated cost reimbursement of $350,000 and other additional revenue of $151,209, which closes that gap. It is therefore my recommendation that the board move to adopt the annual budget for fiscal year 2011-12.”

Although four community members attended the meeting, none took the opportunity to voice their opinion during the public hearing.

The newly passed state budget was not discussed, nor was a failed effort to let voters decide about a set of tax extensions supported by Governor Jerry Brown.

Earlier this year, SBUSD Trustees met with state representatives from across San Diego County to encourage them to support the tax extension that never came to frruition in Sacramento.
