Photo Gallery: Mariner Football Rout Francis Parker in Homecoming Game

The team led 22-0 at the half and never looked back.

Opponents know that they won't have to worry much about pass coverage when they go up against Mar Vista High. The Mariners keep the ball on the ground, and with the success they've been having with that scheme recently under coach Brian Hay, why throw the ball anyway?

"Yeah, we're on target to hit our average from last year -- about two passes a game," Hay told the Prep Pigskin Report camera after the Mariners blanked Francis Parker 37-0 in a nonleague game in Imperial Beach Friday night.

Mar Vista racked up 430 yards on the ground on 40 rushing plays, averaging nearly 11 yards a carry, treating current and former students to a fun homecoming game.

Before the game started, homecoming queen candidates were in a parade around the track atop Corvettes, with contingencies from each class represented and Imperial Beach Fire Department carrying cheerleaders around the track.

At halftime, with fireworks in the air and JROTC swords creating an arch overhead, Sergio “Weewee” Gallegos and Marcia Briseño were crowned homecoming king and queen.

"Our niece, when she was born, couldn't pronounce his name right so she said Wee Wee and it just stuck," said Brigette Raygoza, who wore a shirt with his likeness and carried a "WE LOVE WEE WEE" sign with other members of his family.

Five different players scored touchdowns, and the Mariners were successful on three of four 2-point conversions and their lone PAT kick. Adrian Iriarte, Kenny Nieves, Jimmie Hill, Keevin Moore and quarterback Jordan Lertique ran in the touchdowns. Hill was the leading rusher with 127 yards on 10 carries. Iriarte (3 carries, 91 yards) and Moore (11 carries, 90 yards) finished just under the century mark in rushing yards.

The Mariners, who had a bye last week, are now 2-0 and handed Parker (2-1) its first loss. Mar Vista, which scored in every quarter and led 22-0 at the half, visit Monte Vista (1-2) in Spring Valley next Friday.
