Mar Vista Wrestling Coach Resigns Amid Sexual Harassment Allegation

The parent of a champion wrestler accused team coaches of sexually harassing his daughter and Head Coach Mario Olmos of not taking his claims seriously.

Mario Olmos, Mar Vista High School's longtime wrestling coach, has resigned for "personal reasons," the school said Friday.

Principal Wes Braddock declined to give details, but said Ed Delos Reyes will act as the team's coach for the remainder of the season.

The resignation comes amid allegations that other wrestling coaches at the school sexually harassed the teenage daughter of Jesse Terminel, father of Mar Vista’s 2012 CIF wrestling champion Jesse Terminel.

The elder Terminel says coaches physically and verbally sexually harassed his daughter over the past year.

But Braddock told Patch: "We investigate every claim, no matter what the source is, and we have no evidence at all of anything inappropriate related to relations between athletes and adults."

No official statements have been filed by students with the school about treatment by wrestling coaches, Braddock said.

Since "misinformation can get sucked into a void," Braddock said he met with the team before practice Friday.

"If somebody makes a claim that something untoward has happened, then we start talking to kids,”he said. "I've questioned kids about things that have come to our attention, but at this point in time we don’t have any evidence of wrongdoing."

The team still held practice Friday and will compete this weekend at Rancho Bernardo High School.

Delos Reyes, a former wrestling coach at Chula Visa High School, is the only authorized coach for the wrestling team, said Braddock. Before Friday, Mario Olmos was the only authorized coach for the team, he said.

Particularly with conference, county and state championships in February and March, kids and parents have worked too hard and should not suffer because of the actions of adults, Braddock said.

"Kids should not suffer in any way, shape or form because of any action whatsoever by an adult," he said.

Most recently, Terminel claims that at a wrestling tournament last December, two other coaches asked his 15-year-old daughter inappropriate questions about her brother’s sex life, and suggested he sleep with another student and team manager.

Terminel said he filed no reports because he told Olmos about the alleged sexual harassment two weeks ago. Coaches should react if a parent approaches them with these kinds of concerns, he said.

"'You’re the head coach. That’s why I’m coming to you,'" Terminel told Olmos in a text message earlier this week. "He never did that."

Patch obtained the text messages from Terminel.

"If you cared about the team, you would have told the vice principal about [the two coaches] disrespecting Elena. She’s only 15 years old," Terminel said.

Instead of reporting possible sexual harassment or other allegations, Terminel contends Olmos tried to keep him quiet.

In a string of text messages sent over the course of the past week Terminel shared with IB Patch, Olmos said coming forward would hurt the team and its wrestlers.

"You are bringing the whole team down, Jesse included," one message read.

Other messages said:

Why would you do this? It’s your son’s team.”

More kids are crying and finding it hard to focus in practice.”

What are you hoping to accomplish by getting the whole coaching staff fired?”

Citing personnel issues, Braddock declined to state whether any coaches have been excused, or if any coaches did not go through fingerprinting and background checks required by the school district.

The Sweetwater Union High School District Human Resources Services Division did not respond to requests Friday to confirm whether the two assistants were coaches on the team or if they went through background checks.

Olmos and the assistants did not respond to requests for comment.

Terminel said he’s happy to see Ed Delos Reyes coach the team so his son and other wrestlers can just focus on their sport.

“Ed's going to do a great job,” he said.

Terminel's accusations aren't the first drama to touch wrestling at Mar Vista High School or youth sports in the past year.

Jeffrey Apple, who claimed to be a softball coach, was arrested and found guilty of charges he sexually abused minors. Apple was not fingerprinted or cleared to act as a coach.

Olmos filed a restraining order against parent Robert Brians last January after he allegedly made threats against him during Imperial Beach Predators Junior Wrestling programs.

A restraining order was granted in February in South Bay Superior Court, according to online record.

The Predators practice at Mar Vista High School.

Olmos is a teacher at Mar Vista High School and a Predators coach.

I do not think this situation has been investigated. So based on that, I do not think it is right to automatically feel that the assistant coaching staff is guilty, nor is that to say the girl is lying. Many times communication can get twisted and misunderstood. This happens all time! This accusation needs to be investigated so the truth can be determined. I feel very badly for the wrestling team, the coach(es), and the parents. I hope this can be resolved soon for everyone's sake. To slander someone is very serious and this situation should have been addressed in private with the principal if the coach failed to act soon enough. Making this public is a lose -lose situation.

And as of now they are allegations......I have it under good authority that the young lady involved has signed a statement that there was no inappropriate behavior. Why didn't the fathere bring his accusations to the attention of the administration imediatley? Why such a delay? And I agree that the students are the priority And as far as one of the young ladies that false accusation was not this past December but December of 2011. And that accusation was not against Mr. Olmos but another teacher/coach. as told to me by a wrestlers that knows of that particular incident.. this young lady was asked to be quite more than twice while the coach/teacher was trying to talk to the team. She did not listen and was asked to be quite or to ride home with you.....By the time you got the story from young lady it turned into something else altogether....you may talk to anyone that was on that bus at that time....and so should any of the administrators......again the students should be protected and always come first ...but then the correct facts need to included for the protection of all....Mar Vista is a great school and we want it to remain that way ..yes we can alway improve but sometimes too much talk gets in the way look how much is out already from behind closed doors .Please lets let the facts speak for themselves .........
IB Mom January 21, 2013 at 06:18 AM
I have to say as a parent keeping these issues " behind closed doors" is a scary option. I will hope that all parents are taking this confusing time for the kids to use it as an example that if they feel something isn't right it's ok to speak up. It would be more devastating if any student who feels something is inappropriate had to keep there mouth shut " for the sake of the team". School administrations have been known to sweep things under the rug or make it seem as if the students may not be telling the truth just to avoid negative exposure. I appreciate transparency. It seems it's the only way to keep ALL parties accountable. The truth is a powerful thing as long as its not hidden. It sounds like there's more to this story. One way or another as long as its being looked into I'm sure they'll be resolution that's fair.

'... talk to anyone that was on that bus at that time....' this girl was on a bus with the wrestling team?
Gaylene Scarbrough January 21, 2013 at 07:26 PM
Yes Libi they are managers for the team there also girls on the team also the cheerleaders will travel on the same bus with the football players .This has been going on for a long time girls travel with the boys on the same bus "co-ed" situations.Girls sit in the front boys will sit behind the girls.Boys and girls travel to and from school on buses to attend school or for various reasons.
Libi Uremovic January 21, 2013 at 08:10 PM
i was a statistician for the sports teams in high school...no one was around the team but the people working on the team...it's wasn't about boys/girls... it was about keeping the focus & integrity of the team... same theory used to build teams in the military... lessons learned for the school...i'm sure a lot of the athletes have friends/family that want to hang out....it's inappropriate ...
Gaylene Scarbrough January 21, 2013 at 09:00 PM
Your previous statement said "this girl was on a bus with a wrestling team". I merely stated that this is a common thing to happen on school buses not only for sporting events but for travel to and from school and school functions......and now you are saying it is inappropriate for friends & family to hang out? That has nothing to do with the topic at hand . The girl was supposed to be on that bus that day . I am sure focus and integrity was and is a key point at the time of the actions being brought up. Moving forward let us hope there will not be a repeat of all of this .
Lauren McLennan January 22, 2013 at 02:34 AM
Since when do legitimate journalists publish rumor and accusation? Mr. Olmos is a dedicated teacher at Mar Vista High School and founded the Poseidon Program, an award-winning program that attracts students from across the district. Any teacher who is willing to devote extra time to students by also working as a coach deserves respect, not slander. Although the Sweetwater District is embroiled in scandal, we should not let the unethical behavior of school board members spill into the judgments we make about the teachers who serve the students of this district. No school principal is going to put his career on the line by claiming "we don't have any evidence of wrongdoing." It is not uncommon in this world for parents to make outrageous accusations in order to manipulate sporting competitions. I have no idea what this parent is doing, but I do know this: it is incredibly irresponsible for this publication to put my colleague's reputation in question and in any way to threaten his career with unsubstantiated rumor. If you want to go after the superintendent or school board of this district, then by all means do so. There is certainly enough evidence there for that. But DO NOT go after our teachers without due diligence in your investigation. What you have done here is nothing more than sensationalism and slander.
Lauren McLennan January 22, 2013 at 02:37 AM
While I understand and share your disgust with actions of the school board, that situation has nothing to do with my colleague. Please do not lump teachers in with the indicted. We deserve better treatment than that for continuing to do our best teaching and caring for students in the midst of this district meltdown.
Lauren McLennan January 22, 2013 at 02:38 AM
Thank you for your post, Eileen. I agree with your very sensible comments.
Gaylene Scarbrough January 22, 2013 at 03:27 AM
Lauren so very well put and ever so true . I know I have addressed this because I feel it still needs to be handled profesionally and in private the wrong things have got out and hurting the wrong people .The slander can ruin a person for life more than people realize .

Wrestling Coach/ Parent I first took notice to this article and I was offended how the article labeled Coach Mario who resigned because of allegations over accusations of misconduct and failed actions. It paints a picture that he was the bad guy and failed to do any action what so ever. First of all, the article was posted on one point of view, from the parent. I know first hand that there are a lot of facts that were left out. Coach Mario did not release any statements or comments because he knows that the situation will be resolved. I have known Coach Mario for a couple of years now and went to to his program because I heard nothing but good things and I know he has dedicated his whole life to teaching and mentoring our youth. I do not know the exact details besides what was written in the article but i do know that inside that wrestling room I have seen nothing but organization and positive leadership from both the students and coaches. I am a certified coach for the I.B. Predators and I show up to the wrestling room on a daily basis because the kids program starts after the high shcool ends practice. I show up early so my boys who wrestle for the Predators can watch the high school practice. Every time I was in the room I have never once seen any coaches acting inappropriatly with any students.
Michael Sablan January 22, 2013 at 11:40 AM
Wrestling Coach/ Parent It has deffinitely affected the kids program and the parents are quite angry because we practice in the same room and none have seen any such misconduct. I personally do not know the wreslter, wreslters sister, and parent but I do believe that more information was needed before anything should have been posted. Mainly because there are a lot of details missing and it automatically shows favor with one party and has strong insinuations within the content of the article that Coach Mario as well as the assistant coaching staff are guilty before any formal investigation was done. As a Coach we go through a background check and recieve annual training on coaching and mentoring and that these types of allegations wether true or not, always hurts the kids and the coach which affect them both emotionally and professionally. Either way it is a lose lose because if found innocenet those accusations forever taint their good name. I hope that this same newspaper follows up and posts another article on the outcome and if found incocent I believe that Coach Mario as well as his assistant coaching staff are given an appology in the same BIG BOLD LETTERS from which the original article was posted.
Ken January 22, 2013 at 02:37 PM
Based on comments posted by other wrestling team parents (no misconduct witnessed) one gets a feeling this may be more about one parent who was unhappy with their child's coaching and figured out a way to force a change (and maybe pocket some change in the process)? These types of things don't generally occur in a vacuum.
Gaylene Scarbrough January 22, 2013 at 10:32 PM
So well put and so agree with you view Mr. Sabian
Gaylene Scarbrough January 22, 2013 at 10:39 PM
Ken you sure brought up some very good points and sound very believeable sure makes you think . What some parents will do for thier children in not always the straingt and right thing to do they will do anything to push that child up . Iam only speaking of selcect and few parents on that course .Most of us would do anything but most of us would do it the right way! Let the truth pervail!
michael esquer January 22, 2013 at 11:11 PM
I believe this accusation has been blown way out of proportion. I personally know coach Mario Olmos and his staff. Sexual harassment accusations is a defamation of character. They are nothing of what this article is describing them to be. These accusations have no legs to stand on. Why weren't police reports filled? Why wait a whole year to come out? I was witness to this disgruntled parent (Mr.Terminel) last season about his daughter and the whole sexual harassment thing. He would come to me angry about this and that about coaches etc. Last season it was the same headache (same parent), coach N. had to put up with. It's amazing how whenever the son of this parent loses is when these excuses/allegations come out. Not to take anything away from Jessie as a wrestler, his father is not only bringing the team down but also his own son. This article should have never been written. It not only brings people to assumptions but is a disgrace to parents and youth involved in sports. The reason Mario resigned is not because of being found guilty. He has 3 children (1 new born daughters) and wife to worry about and not this slander from 1 selfish parent.
Mike Esquer January 22, 2013 at 11:38 PM
I left out my credentials in my last post. I was the ib predators youth team head coach last season. I current hold a coaching card for sweetwater union high school district and am the head technician coach for Olympian high school. I never seen such conduct take place. A well deserved apology should be given once everything is cleared.
Gaylene Scarbrough January 23, 2013 at 06:14 AM
Ken after tonights meeting at Mar Vista this parent reared his ugly head and claims he is holding on to some kind of film and was going to show it right then and there .So wrong besides illeagal .It was not the time or place and is holding on this and has for some time. I do hope the parents and coaches get this wrong to a right , This parent was exactly what you thought ,
IB Happy January 23, 2013 at 05:01 PM
Amen to that, Mike Esquer! People who have NO idea what's going on are jumping to conclusions. Mario Olmos was a great coach and is an honorable person. While Ed Delos Reyes may also be a wonderful coach, Mario Olmos will be greatly missed. It is sad but understandable that he opted to resign for the privacy of his family. It is sadder still that few people are seeing through this vindictive parent's scheme.
IB Happy January 23, 2013 at 05:05 PM
You are absolutely correct! Why the rush to judgment?
Albert January 23, 2013 at 09:42 PM
When I first saw this article regarding Coach Mario and why he resigned I was very shocked. I was a student at Mar Vista high and I had Coach Mario as a teacher. Now my daughter goes there and had him as a teacher as well. My son has been wrestling for the last 6 years for the IB Predators and I have never seen any wrong doing out of all those years I have been there.I dont think this article should have been written until everything was looked into beacuse not only does it hurt Coach Mario and his family and the other family involved but the school as well. When you really think about it, it hurts other coaches and teachers. I think people jumping to conclusion is wrong because they need to put themselves in Coach Marios shoes and see why he resigned. Coach Mario was thinking of his family and the privacy they need. I really think that after all this is done this will make people really think long and hard before they wait so long to come forward with anything. Make sure they have ALL facts before ruining someones life..

Albert again so in agreement with you for all the same reasons . Facts first behind closed doors then move on ..........again the wait issue so wrong so sad .

I personally have known Mr. Olmos the past three years, and can attest that he is of outstanding character. I am disappointed that this article has made this much noise without any evidence that Mr Olmos is guilty of anything. I do not known what happened. And neither does anyone else, other then the parties involved. Please hold all judgement until FACTS are found. I too am a wrestling coach/teacher in the district.
Gaylene Scarbrough February 01, 2013 at 08:36 AM
They say the facts/proof are in some film in which Mr.Terminel has . He made it open to all he has it . Will someone of authority please seize this and check for lude activety he is claiming, All parents should be advised if thier children were filmed with out permission as well .Please evalute this behind closed doors with the autorities and then let the judjement begin stop the assumetoins now let the truth provide our answers .It still makes me think who has seen this ..........in this day and age we need to protect our children from this social media circus .

Can we get a follow up story on Mr. Terminel proof and outcome?
Joe Schmo February 10, 2013 at 06:24 AM
Heard his son took 2nd at Metros today, who is Mr. Terminel going to blame this time?
