Mar Vista, Sweetwater Schools Named Among Best in Nation

U.S. News and World Report named Mar Vista High School #172 among California schools and among the top 1,000 nationwide.

In its annual ranking of schools, U.S. News & World Report magazine has named the best schools in the nation.

This year, all 12 of the Sweetwater District’s comprehensive high schools were named Silver Medal winners, placing them among the top nine percent of over 22,000 schools in the U.S.

Schools were also ranked within each state. Sweetwater Schools ranked in the top 360 out of over 2,400 schools. Olympian High (#101 in CA and #522 in the U.S.) and Eastlake High (#102 in CA and #531 in the U.S.) were the top schools in the district and only narrowly missed being named Gold Medal winners, an honor given to the top 500 schools in the nation.

In addition to Olympian and Eastlake, several other Sweetwater District schools were among the top 1,000 schools in the nation. Included were Mar Vista High (#172 in CA and #886 in the U.S.) in Imperial Beach, Otay Ranch High (#185 in CA and #959 in the U.S.) and San Ysidro High (#187 in CA and #961 in the U.S.).

Rankings by U.S.News & World Report were done in partnerships with the teamed up with the Washington, D.C.-based American Institutes for Research (AIR), one of the largest behavioral and social science research organizations in the world.

AIR implemented U.S. News's comprehensive rankings methodology, which is based on the key principles that a great high school must serve all of its students well, not just those who are college-bound, and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show the school is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.

"This is an amazing honor to be ranked among some of the best schools in the nation,” said school board President Pearl Quiñones. “Students, teachers, administrators and the entire staff do a tremendous job on a daily basis. This honor is thanks to their efforts.”
