Mar Vista Students Fight to Finance Prom

The 2012 Mar Vista Senior class is struggling to finance prom and want to raise more than $10,000 in the next couple of months.

The Class of 2012 at is financially strapped, and are looking toward fundraising and private donations to help finance this year’s prom.

“The only reason we’re financially struggling is because the three previous presidents didn’t do any fundraising,” said Anselmo Fuentes, president for the class of 2012.

At the start of the year, Fuentes said, there was only about $100 in the class’s coffers.

The Class of 2012 wants to have prom at the US GRANT Hotel in downtown San Diego, which means $20,000 must be raised in the next couple of months.

Most of that money comes from prom ticket sales, Fuentes said, which go for $55 each. $5,000 in tickets have been sold so far, though sales will continue until the May 19, 2012 formal event.

"As long as we sell enough we should be good,” Fuentes said, although he said he is nervous they may come up short.

Associated Student Body president Althea Escalante said a last resort is to have prom in the school’s gymnasium, although it’s not the popular choice amongst students, she said.

She also said US GRANT Hotel is asking for a $5,000 down payment, due in the next few months, which would wipe out the remaining balance in the class’s current account.

Escalante said Fuentes is working hard to get the funds needed for prom.

“The class president has been on his A game,” she said.

Some fundraisers to take place soon include selling class t-shirts, a Halloween carnival and car wash.

ASB Director William Olinder insists that there will be a prom this year.

“Prom is not in jeopardy. We will raise money to have it. It’s not in jeopardy.” he said.

As to whether or not students can make it to the US GRANT Hotel, he said "it's doable. It's definitely doable, as long as they do some healthy fundraising now."

Private donations are welcomed and will go directly to fund prom, Fuentes said.
