The Mar Vista High Graduating Class of 2011

Hundreds gathered Tuesday evening at Southwestern College to celebrate Mar Vista High School's Class of 2011.

held its graduation ceremony Tuesday at Southwestern College in Chula Vista.

A total of 360 Mar Vista seniors turned their tassels, and were joined by other students, staff, parents and alumni. Of the graduating class, 41 students in white robes led the procession as Seal Bearers for the California Scholastics Federation.

The ceremony lasted about an hour and began with the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance,” the presentation of the flag by the ROTC color guard and the singing of the National Anthem by student Carmen Nieves.

Speeches were given by school valedictorian Jacquelin Benedicto and salutatorian Michelle Moreno.

Then students walked across the stage to be acknowledged. Diplomas were officially awarded at school Wednesday.

The ceremony ended with the alma mater and an invitation for family and friends of graduates to take the field to celebrate the occasion. 

Mar Vista High students finish the 2010-11 school year Friday.

The Class of 2011 finished their final exams and received their report cards last week.

Classes begin for the 2011-12 school year July 20.
