Mar Vista Fire Students Who Assisted Classmate After Seizure to Be Recognized

The City of Imperial Beach City Council will recognize four students training to become firefighters at their next meeting for assisting a classmate who had a seizure.

Four Mar Vista High School students will be recognized by the City of Imperial Beach City Council at their Dec. 7 meeting for assisting a classmate who had a seizure last month.

Martin Alamilla, Brandon Valdes, Rodney Walford and Tyler Manyonare are all students in the school's Fire Science program, which teaches basic fire and first aid skills.

To practice fire hose handling and clean the stands after a home football game, the Fire Science class was doing drills near the school's track and football field Nov. 17.

As the hose drills ended, Martin Alamilla, Brandon Valdes, Rodney Walford, Tyler Manyon were cleaning equipment when a student on the track in a PE class had a seizure, hitting her head as fell to the ground. 

The four ran to her aid, called 911 and waited with her until an ambulance came to bring her to the hospital, said Fire Science teacher Rick Nichols.

The student who had a seizure may have been extremely dehydrated, he said.
