A Casino Night to Remember

#SBUSDEF Casino Night fun and games!

The South Bay Union School District Education Foundation held its first annual Casino Night Fundraiser on Saturday, January 25, 2014.

The event was held at the Boys and Girls Club of Imperial Beach. The night of games and prizes began at 6 PM with smiling patrons lined outside the door in show of their support. The fundraiser provided support and awareness of the Foundation’s mission to enrich student learning and achievement. Funds raised at this event directly impact the students in the district through the mini-grants awarded in the fall.

From blackjack to craps to roulette and poker, attendees had no trouble choosing the right table to play. The Foundation worked with Casino Concepts to arrange the night of FUNdraising entertainment. Two tables hosted celebrity dealers such as Dr. Katie McNamara, SBUSD’s own superintendent, which were quite popular among attendees.  Many local businesses such as K-PastaIB Pet, and Seaside Candy generously sponsored tables in show of their support for children and education. Chula Vista Golf Course was also very kind in donating Fototunnel’s services, which allowed attendees to take home a personal picture souvenir with a casino backdrop.

1st Vice President Dana Tomlinson served as MC for the night, where she awarded numerous raffle prizes by the hour. (Please visit sbusdef.org under Events and Casino Night for more prize details). The many raffle prizes given away included a Loews gift basket valued at $500 and a night for two including dinner at Harrah’s Reno, Nevada. Among other notable prizes were admission tickets for two to Hearst Castle in San Simeon and a family membership for four to Mission San Juan Capistrano. Many local vendors also generously donated prizes like IB Yoga, IB Fitness, Filippi’s and The Futbol Factory, just to name a few (again, please visit sbusdef.org to see our wonderful sponsors/donors). A silent auction was also held which included items such as a handmade quilt, Sea World passes and three months free internet from Cox.

A delicious array of food was served and catered by The Scoreboard and a no-host bar was kindly attended to by two volunteer bartenders, Sharron and Erika from the IB Forum, for the night. A mini dessert bar was graciously arranged and sponsored by Claudia Sanchez of Little Hoots Family Day Care.

Melanie Ellsworth, the SBUSD Foundation President, remarked “The Foundation would like to thank the community for their enthusiastic participation in our fundraising event. We look forward to next time!”

The SBUSD Education Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit with an all-volunteer staff comprised of SBUSD teachers and community members.
