Walk Northmont’s Way: Governor’s Council to Present $10,000 to PTA

Elementary School will be paid a visit from Jerry Brown’s rep after International Walk to School Day.

Northmont Elementary has a busy schedule Wednesday morning.

Besides International Walk to School Day on Oct. 5—they’ll walk from Northmont Park to campus—students and staff also will get a visit from Gov. Jerry Brown’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

In a 15-minute assembly slated to take place at 10:30 a.m., Northmont’s PTA will be presented a $10,000 check in recognition of having won as statewide Parent Association of the Year.

“We are very excited about this, as is our PTA,” said Melody Belcher, Northmont’s principal of five years.

Belcher says one of the reasons their school got the attention it did was because of an “eye-catching” ballroom dance program they offer.

“It’s not something you see that every school offers to their kids,” she said.

I've heard the had to cut the Ballroom Dance program this year. If that's true it's a shame.

The desicion to cut this program has not been made (although some have argued for it)! This program is absolutely phenomenal. It allows students who may not shine academically to grab the spotlight and build self-esteem through their creative dance expression. My two older children have participated in this wonderful program that culminates in a dance competition held at the Scottish Rite Center in the Spring. This program teaches social etiquette, manners and teamwork along with the obvious physical benefits of dance. It is priceless and should definitley be continued.

That's good to know. I had one child already participate and I was looking forward to their younger sibling getting the same privilege.
