Reports: Navy SEALs Punished for Aid in Developing Video Game

Seven members of SEAL Team 6 will receive letters in their files and forfeit part of their salaries.

The Associated Press and other outlets are reporting that members of the Navy's SEAL Team 6 – best known for their involvement in Osama bin Laden's death – have been punished for helping develop a video game.

According to NBC.com, seven members of the team helped in the creation of the “Medal of Honor: Warfighter” game.

They were issued written reprimands and will have to give up a portion of their salaries for two months, according to the report.

Rear Admiral Gary Bonelli, the deputy commander of Naval Special Warfare who is based at the Naval Amphibious Base, wrote that the punishments “send a clear message throughout our Force that we are and will be held to a high standard of accountability," according to NBC.

The SEALs, once known for their secrecy and vaunted toughness, have been in the spotlight increasingly, which placed real members of the team in a fictional setting.

In September, another SEAL released a book, No Easy Day, offering insight into the bin Laden raid. Questions were raised then about whether the author, writing under the psydonym Mark Owen, had committed any national security breaches by writing the tome.

It's not the "government" that's punishing them, it's the military, there is a difference. The guys knew that they weren't supposed to do what they did, and yet they did it anyway. There is a chain of command in the military and these guys didn't use it. That's not cool.

I think they would be the experts to consult for realism in a virtual setting. I really don't see where they did anything wrong. punishing people for consulting is wrong if they didn't leak any national secrets. I think the navy is a bit too hung up on keeping secrets from the public that pays them!!!!

That's a good point Shari, but I doubt it was as simple as "consulting" for realism, even if it were, you aren't allowed to follow only the "cool" policies in the military. The lame ones are just as applicable. And the secrets are there for their survival.

They did not get the MEMO that only Obama can leak information about the raid.
