UPDATE: Rain Draws Runoff, Flooding to Street Near Shopping Center Site

The cause of the flooding is still unknown, City Manager Gary Brown said Tuesday afternoon, but grass will be planted within the next week, he said, which could help reduce runoff during the next rain event.

Rain carried mud and water from the site for a new shopping center on Palm Avenue into an adjacent neighborhood near 8th Street Monday afternoon.

The flooding may have been due to a clogged or overwhelmed storm drain but the city is still speaking to Patriot General Engineering to assess the problem and ensure procedure laid out in agreements were followed.

There's usually flooding there but not to that extent," said City Manager Gary Brown. "I'm not sure if we can determine even if the proper procedure was followed whether it would have stopped the flooding."
