Race for 78th Assembly District Features Incumbent, 2 Challengers

The 78th State Assembly District race pits an incumbent Democrat vs. two Republican challengers.

Toni Atkins served her term in office representing the 76th district. She faces Ralph Denney, a small business owner and Robert E. Williams, a Republican Central Committee member in Tuesday's state primary.

The district, reshaped following the 2010 census, takes in a broad sweep of the coast, from Solana Beach through La Jolla, Point Loma and Coronado, down to the border and Imperial Beach. The district also stretches into some San Diego neighborhoods as well. 

Before redistricting, IB was part of the 79th District and represented by Assemblyman Ben Hueso. IB will remain part of the 79th until Election Day in November.

Patch posed questions to candidates throughout San Diego County, in the guise of fictitious constituents of all ages, professions and backgrounds, to give those seeking the office the chance to address a variety of problems they might be faced with should they win the seat.
