Poll: Should ‘In God We Trust’ Be Displayed in IB Council Chambers?

The idea will be discussed at Wednesday's City Council meeting.

The IB City Council will discuss whether they should discuss at a future meeting whether or not to put the phrase "In God We Trust" on the wall in council chambers.

Jacquie Sullivan, a Councilwoman from Bakersfield, CA is the founder of In God We Trust ~ America, Inc. Imperial Beach Councilwoman Lorie Bragg recommend the idea be considered for discussion after Sullivan sent an email to city officials last November.

Following a vote by members of the House of Representatives last November to reaffirm "In God We Trust" as the nation's motto, the group is making an effort to make the phrase present in all city and county chambers and state capitals across the United States.

The bill passed 396-9 and encourages the national motto be displayed in all "public buildings, public schools and other government institutions."

"In God We Trust" has been on American currency since 1864 and the national motto since 1956.

The bill's dissenting opinion in the House Judiciary Committee, said the resolution "has no force of law, only reaffirms existing law and further injects the hand of government into the private religious lives of the American people" and said the majority opinion "transgressed the clear line between government and religion in violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment."

At the time, President Obama and dissenting Democrats called the vote a waste of time when the nation has several other more important issues to worry about.
