Poll: Is Code Enforcement Good for IB?

Telling people what to do with their property is often controversial. Do you think code compliance is necessary?

opened its Code Compliance Division in the 1990s. Hundreds of citations are handed out every year for things like overgrown vegetation, illegal parking, RVs or motor homes on properties with residents, broken windows etc. 

On one side people have said code compliance helps keep the city looking good and can benefit public safety. On the other, many residents and businesses have complained that code compliance officers can be heavy handed and overly aggressive.

If you don't take care of your violation within a month, fines can start at $50 per day, per violation. In the case of two local residents forced to appear in front of City Council, who said they could not afford to pay.
