A water main break that filled parts of Old Palm Avenue with mud and water Friday morning was repaired by 9:45 p.m., returning water to the taps of about 200 customers nearby, said Brian Baretto, a spokesman for California-American Water.
Due to water being shut off at a block from the break, a service scheduled for Friday evening was canceled. The service was for people who have a hard time attending church on Christmas or recently lost a loved one, said Pastor Phyllis Ashe.
"What happened was we repaired the section that was leaking and when we went to fill it back up, we sprung another leak about four feet down," Baretto said. A 12-foot section of the pipe iwill be replaced. "Our guys are going to be out there until this job is done anticipate service back up later this evening."
Westbound traffic on Old Palm Avenue has been redirected to a detour on Fourth Street. When the break initially occured around 1:30 a.m., Palm Avenue was closed from Seacoast Drive to Fourth Street. The street closure was limited to between Third and Fourth streets when water began to recede four hours later.
Why the water main break occured has not yet been discovered, Baretto said.
