New Technology Helps Walkers Cross Border Faster

Scanners are now available for those with radio frequency technology embedded in their passports and travel documents.

Want to make it across the border faster? New technology is making it possible and it's now available at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, reports NBCSanDiego.com.

Border crossers who have their passports and other documents available can use Ready Lanes that lead to self-service scanners to speed the process of making it through to Mexico.

In order to qualify, border crossers must have RFID – radio frequency identification – enabled in their passports, a SENTRI card or recently issued permanent resident card compatible with the new technology.

Travelers can sign up for those documents too.

Customs officials estimate that wait times can be cut in half because of the scanners according to the report.
