Navy Names New Leader of Coronado-Based USS Vinson Strike Group

Rear Adm. David Steindl took over for Rear Adm. T.K. Shannon after a ceremony at sea Thursday.

Rear Adm. David Steindl has assumed command of Carrier Strike Group One, which is centered around the Coronado-based aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, the Navy reported Friday.

Steindl replaced Rear Adm. T.K. Shannon in a change-of-command ceremony Thursday aboard the Vinson while at sea.

Under Shannon, the strike group deployed once to the Middle East and western Pacific and took part in exercises with vessels of other nations.

“It has been my honor and privilege to work with the outstanding men and women of Carrier Strike Group One over the past two years,” Shannon said. “Time and again you displayed the utmost professionalism and perseverance, ensuring we were always trained and ready to deploy whenever called upon by our leadership.”

Shannon is headed for Washington, D.C., to take charge of the Navy's Military Sealift Command. He was awarded the Legion of Merit during the ceremony.

Steindl was most recently commander of the Naval Service Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

He has also served as the commander of Destroyer Squadron 7 and was the sea combat commander during the Ronald Reagan Strike Group's maiden deployment to the Arabian Gulf.

CSG-1 also includes the squadrons of Carrier Air Wing 17, guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill and guided-missile destroyer USS Halsey.
