Miracle Shopping Center May Be Demolished By the End of the Month

Small steps have been taken up until now to prepare the Miracle Shopping Center to be torn down, but real demolition should begin next week. It will take about two weeks to tear down the buildings, he said.

The Miracle Shopping Center, which first opened in the late 1940s, may be torn down by the end of the month, said Imperial Beach Redevelopment Agency coordinator Jerry Selby.

A process to prepare the building for demolition began last month and included removing asbestos from portions of the building and regulatory paperwork. Disconnecting the shopping center's gas and electricity connections also took longer than expected.

Selby said the city hopes the project will receive an air pollution control permit by next week, at which time demolition will begin.

"It should take about two weeks to tear down the buildings, two weeks for the foundation and a few days for rest of site improvements," he said.

Demolition will start with buildings in the 800 block of Palm Avenue then move to buildings in the 700 block of Palm Avenue.

An agreement between the Imperial Beach Redevelopment Agency and Sudberry Properties will be presented to City Council for approval at their Dec. 21 meeting, Selby said.
