For the First Time Ever, Mayor to Deliver State of City Address

For the first time since he was elected to office in 2006, Mayor Jim Janney will deliver a State of the City Address next month to bring Imperial Beachians and the public "up to speed."

The speech will be given Jan. 22 at Pier South Hotel. A time has not yet been determined.

"Since I’ve been mayor I’ve been lacking in the fact that I haven’t given a State of the City address the last six years," Janney said at a city council meeting Wednesday. "I thought it was important with the wind down of redevelopment and a lot of good things happening in Imperial Beach to have a State of the City address."

IB's new hotel is scheduled to open the third week of December, Pacifica Companies said. An assortment of bars or restaurants have opened or are scheduled to open in recent months.

The now defunct Imperial Beach Redevelopment Agency invested $7 million in the hotel project.

Addresses are given by mayors, governors and the president of the United States to brief citizens about the condition of their government.

President Barack Obama is scheduled to deliver the State of the Union to Congress and the American people in January.

"That event is for the people of Imperial Beach so we can hopefully bring you up to speed on how things have been going in the past, how things are going today and how things may be in the future," Janney said.
