Lorena Gonzalez Wins State Assembly Race Over Castaneda

San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council CEO Lorena Gonzalez routed Chula Vista City Councilman Steve Castaneda in a special election Tuesday to represent California State Assembly 80th District.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Gonzalez received 72 percent of 22,000 votes cast, according to Secretary of State Debra Bowen.

The 80th Assembly District includes National City, part of Chula Vista and parts of San Diego including the Nestor, Egger Highlands and Otay Mesa neighborhoods.

Gonzalez will replace Ben Hueso who was elected to the State Senate to represent the 40th District. Hueso replaced Juan Vargas who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Vargas replaced Bob Filner who was elected as Mayor of San Diego.
