Free Whooping Cough Booster Shots

The county has set up vaccination clinics on the weekends at Northgate Market and is offering the pertussis booster shot (Tdap) to the public for free through the end of the month.

Still combating an epidemic of whooping cough that has sickened hundreds of children and adults in every part of San Diego, the county's top medical official is urging parents to vaccinate their children.

“These vaccination clinics are a great opportunity for parents to make sure their children have the recommended pertussis booster shot; those 10 years of age or older and adults who have not yet received it and who have contact with infants,” Dr. Wilma Wooten, County Public Health Officer, said in a county press release.

The county recently mandated the pertussis booster shot for all students entering the upper grades. Beginning July 1, students in 7th-12th grade at all public and private schools will have to show proof of the vaccination before they can attend classes. The county says this new policy will be strictly enforced, with no grace period.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children receive the Tdap booster shot at 10-11 years of age.

The vaccine is available from primary care physicians, but those without medical insurance can visit a county public health center.
