Ex-SEALs Killed in Benghazi May Receive Congressional Gold Medals

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-El Cajon) plans to present legislation to give the highest civilian award to Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty.

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-El Cajon) has proposed that Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty receive posthumous Congressional Gold medals for their heroic actions in Benghazi, Libya last September, according to NBC San Diego.

After the U.S. consulate was attacked, both men left the safety of a nearby compound to save the lives of U.S. State Department officials, according to reports.

The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest honor Congress can bestow on a civilian.

Both Woods and Doherty were working for a private security firm at the time of the Sept. 11, 2012 attack but served as Navy SEALs in the past.

Memorial foundations have been established for both Woods and Doherty.
