Bayshore Bikeway Gets An Extra 1.8 Miles

SANDAG will supervise construction through the end of the year.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Chula Vista Friday to mark the construction of an additional 1.8-mile of dedicated bike path for the Bayshore Bikeway.

The new stretch of Bikeway is entirely in Chula Vista from H Street to Palomar Street and will mean 14.3 miles of the 24-mile path that encompasses San Diego Bay is dedicated to bikes.

“This new segment of the Bayshore Bikeway will provide a safe route for bicyclists visiting the Chula Vista bayfront and act as a link to our region’s rich history of rail travel,” Supervisor Greg Cox said in a press release. “When we’re done, we will invite everyone with a bicycle to come down and explore this scenic section of the Bay.”

The San Diego Association of Governments will supervise the addition which is expected to cost $1.5 million. Construction will continue through the end of the year.

“SANDAG is passionate about providing this region with more bicycle and pedestrian amenities,” SANDAG Second Vice Chair and Imperial Beach Mayor Jim Janney said in the same press release. “In the Draft 2050 Regional Transportation Plan prepared by SANDAG, $3.4 billion are expected to be invested in bicycle and pedestrian projects and programs over the next 40 years.”
