2 Accidents Back Up Traffic at I-5 Palm Avenue Exit

In two separate incidents, two woman, one on a bike and one on a motorcycle, were hit by cars near Interstate 5 and Palm Avenue. The woman on a bike was trapped underneath a car for a period of time.

Traffic backed up at the southbound Interstate 5 Palm Avenue exit Friday afternoon after two separate accidents, including one in which a bicycle rider was hit by a car near the corner of Palm and Saturn Boulevard, authorities said.

A woman was riding her bike against traffic around 1:30 p.m. near the Southland Plaza Shopping Center when she was hit by the car and trapped underneath the vehicle for a period of time, according to a San Diego Police Department watch commander.

The unidentified woman suffered head injuries and was transported to the hospital.

In a separate incident about 2:45 p.m. near the Palm Avenue exit on Interstate 5, a woman on a motorcycle was hit by a Ford Expedition, said Larry Landeros with California Highway Patrol. The motorcycle would land on top of her, and she suffered injuries to her legs.

an exit north of the home dept shopping center would be looking very good to the people stuck in traffic right now...
June Murray-Schultze September 7, 2012 at 08:02 pm
They might want to consider that once they open that new Walmart. That area is already congested enough and there is only one way in and one way out. Very poor planning.
Shorebird September 7, 2012 at 08:07 pm
Walmart should pay for an exit north of Palm or San Diego City council since they are the ones that approved opening a Walmart in that center. Isnt that the same intersection where the proposed increased in speed limit would begin? Hello Caltrans, Imperial Beach may have a problem here.
Urdadi Ismydadi September 8, 2012 at 02:04 am
Once this walmart open, there will be hell in that intersection! This is why I either go through Coronado Ave. or go through the back, where the horse stables are and get on Dairy Mart to get on the I5NORTH! I AM NOT DEALING WITH THESE CRAZY PEOPLE! The Lady that got ran over must have been high on some IB drugs, because she was not only going the wrong way, but she went ramming into traffic like nothing! Crazy people i tell you.. And let me guess.. They blamed the poor guy that hit her.. He kept grabbing himself, asking her if she was ok.. Please open another entrance to the freeway north of HD! Its going to be pretty ugly there..
Urdadi Ismydadi September 8, 2012 at 02:06 am
I AGREE!
Libi Uremovic September 8, 2012 at 02:39 am
i've hear that there was suppose to be a ramp put in north of the mall, but it never happened...
...anyone know the background on that..?
Shorebird September 8, 2012 at 02:58 am
pssst! Libi, they (planners/managers, Walmart ) are all hoping we will forget the need for a ramp there..However, as that area is controlled by the State of California maybe a huge outcry now would attract the attention of someone who wants to be elected or re-elected and the ramp will be built or le5tters to Walmart>
John Galt September 8, 2012 at 10:42 am
Why should Walmart pay? Why not Von's or Home Depot? The intersection has always been a mess.
Jon Hall September 8, 2012 at 11:14 am
Caltrans said no to the ramp after Egger sold the land for the stores to go in --- they also revamped the entire off-ramp and created the mess we have now --- many bitched at that time and were told too damn bad
We also tried to get 19th Street finished to Main St --- were told to forget it ...
Shorebird September 8, 2012 at 12:10 pm
perhaps when the accident rate increases and the intersection is noted for serious traffic problems someone will pay attention.. Can hardly wait for all the Holiday shoppers coming up soon. Coronado avenue will be overrun too, just by folks wanting to take care of their own lives, like getting to and from work, school or maybe trying to get to the freeway. Which will be worse, all the way to Coronado to go across the bridge to get out of town or trying to get through Palm avenue & Saturn. It won't be pretty.
Devin Townsend September 8, 2012 at 12:12 pm
IB drugs? You need to check yourself ALEX. There are far worse "drug problems" in other cities in San Diego. IB doesn't need people like you bad mouthing it.
Shorebird September 8, 2012 at 12:14 pm
Walmart bought San Diego City Council on this one, let em pay..they are one of the richest groups of people in the U,S. They can darn well afford to do more for the area, with all their profit from made in China goods.
Victor Mele September 8, 2012 at 04:58 pm
Well said.
kathleen September 9, 2012 at 01:02 am
Yep I agree.....IB is a wonderful place. loved it all my 45yrs. never did like the bad mouthers. I say, u don't like it dont live here, makes more room for the rest of us whom know what a gem IB really is....
ALEX September 9, 2012 at 01:08 am
I love IB.. I never said I dont... Did I mention anything about not like living here? I love it.. But it's really sad to know that there is a lot of drugs here in IB.. U need a crack house.. there's a couple in each block.. YES.. there's other cities battling with this issue, but I have not seen it as much as I have in IB..
ibbarbara September 9, 2012 at 01:19 am
Thank you Devin & Kathleen. Agree with you both.
ALEX September 9, 2012 at 01:33 am
BTW KAthleen.. Unfortunate for you that we just bought a home here.. so I'll be here for a very long time.. ;) "IF" I would have a problem with the drug rate here.. I would have never chosen this area for my family.. Just to let you know.. They don't bother me.. I don't get them in trouble.. Simple as that..
Libi Uremovic September 9, 2012 at 02:07 am
there was a junkie living on ocean lane selling crack & heroin ...we'd have bums hanging out, needles and vomit on the lane...the neighbors went to the landlord , but the landlord refused to control the junkies....their 'policy' is to take no action ''until there is an arrest''...
so we called the sheriff's every time we saw them gathering - i called so many times i would ask for a 'junkie sweep on ocean lane' and dispatch would know exactly what i was talking about...they made dozens of arrests ... ...and i turned into code compliance 17 city and state code violations on the property - with 12 pages of color pictures... this city double tickets - if the sheriff's dept is called the city tickets the tenant and the landlord....1st ticket $100, 2nd ticket $200, 3rd ticket $400... if the tenant violates code compliance the landlord is also ticketed....i told dave garcie to tell jerry bice that i'm going track every property he owns and manages and write them up for everything i can find....i can find a lot.... .....no more junkies on ocean lane...

Just to clear the air. The young lady who got hit is a close friend of my family and I. She was coming down the hill and her brakes went out and she had no way of stopping. That's what happend, it was an ACCIDENT! No drugs or anything like it, just bad luck. She is recovering fine but her the extent of her leg injury is not known yet. I feel for the driver as well as it must have been horrifying to hit someone and have them pinned under the car.
I do believe that the City and shopping center owner should really think about providing an alternate exit as a way of helping to make the center more accessible. Libi, thanks for keeping an eye on our city even when those who are paid to fail. Jack

I always thought the City of Imperial Beach limit on the east side started at 15thst. According to Mapquest it is somewhere between 16th &18th st..at the veary least east of 18th street is South San Diego City limit.
http://www.mapquest.com/maps?address=825+Imperial+Beach+Blvd&city=Imperial+Beach&state=CA&zipcode=91932&redirect=true City of San Diego is responsible for that traffic cluster at Saturn and Palm ave. Get your posse up and ride to San Diego City Council

My faith has been restored. Looking outside my kitchen window this a.m. I saw a man walking his dogRead More with a bucket and pick-up grabber. I couldn't believe my eyes. He was cleaning up all of the dog feces along the estuary on Seacoast. I will keep my eyes out for him again so that I can go out and personally thank him for his great volunteer work. What a great IB resident!!

This is a delaying tactic. They are going to try to appease enough of the groups to break up theRead More coalition. The IBCC has given away millions to some of the richest men in San Diego County. Why are the people forced to take a hair cut on the budget crisis. Let the city employees who stood by and did nothing while getting raises as IB was looted. Sincerely, IBMad@madenoughyet.com
Marcus Boyd June 7, 2013 at 11:46 am
Thank you for posting this. Great job to all who were involved with the Alternative Solution to IBRead More Sports Park Privatization Planning Committee. While the above referenced "delaying tactic" is likely true, it will be up to the community's grassroots activism to force the council to a public decision on the issue. Their "delaying tactic" comes with a price in 2014 - when two council seats and the mayors seat is up for grabs. Who's interested?

Mayor Janney seems anguished at finding a process he can still control ? Probably so he can finishRead More the deal and deliver the goods; per the previous DONE DEAL. He acts like; No matter what process they do, the only decision will be YMCA. 16:08 Janney: "We can appoint our plants on the committee?" Gary Brown: "Oh Yea!" "OH YEA!" _____________________________________ If the YMCA took over ownership of Municipal Property and then went Bankrupt....would tax-payer assets be sold off to the highest bidder via Bankruptcy Proceedings? Maybe the YMCA is going to pass the properties through to another entity that will buy them out when they file for planned future bankruptcy? Hey ...If the YMCA is running the Municipal Pools in Chula Vista and National City now...maybe they'd like to build a pool for Imperial Beach with their own money; since all the Imperial Beach RDA money went for "OTHER PROJECTS"? Is this a classic struggle over who controls the children in the community?

@ john 10 news found expired canned food from December..
John Galt June 5, 2013 at 09:06 pm
Melissa - I know that. My comment is saying that canned goods keep past the expiration date justRead More fine. It is the processed meats in the cold sections that concern me most, followed by produce.

I have been here in IB for ten years and maybe shopped at moldies/Wallys a dozen times 9 of thoseRead More were for wine. The first experience at walley was a sale on bad meat for a BBQ and yogurt that was expired the second time was canned goods that were on sale and I was charged full price the third time was a watermelon well at least the mellon was good ;-/ we need a Whole foods or Trader Joes in IB
