The Saturday-night checkpoint screened drivers from 7:30 p.m. until 2:30 a.m.

A checkpoint staffed by sheriff’s deputies in Imperial Beach Saturday night resulted in three arrests for suspicion of DUI and 15 impounded vehicles, according to the department.

The checkpoint operated from 7:30 p.m. until 2:30 a.m. at 11th Street and Palm Avenue, according to the sheriff’s department. Of the 1,190 vehicles that went through the checkpoint, all but 10 were contacted by deputies to check driver’s licenses and detect signs of impairment, and 59 were sent to a secondary-inspection area. Twelve drivers were given field sobriety tests.

Deputies issued 12 citations for various violations, including driving without a license or on a suspended license. The sheriff’s department said it is placing 30-day holds on vehicles driven by unlicensed drivers or those with a suspended license.
