Nude Teens Jump From Pier

Four teenagers jumped naked from the Imperial Beach Pier Tuesday, a lifeguard said.

Shortly after sunset Tuesday, four teenagers jumped naked from the Imperial Beach Pier, said Captain Robert Stabenow.

Sheriff deputies contacted the teens around 8 p.m.

"When we got there, they were already out of the water and up on the pier retrieving their clothes that they left on the pier," Stabenow said.

A fisher reported that his line may have been cut, but it was dark and could not be verified.

Since their jump into the water wasn't witnessed, he said, the teens were given a strict warning and let go.

Fortunately the surf was low and the water was warm.

"What's good is no one got hurt," Stabenow said. "When the surf's big, something can happen, but they were lucky."

According to the Imperial Beach Municipal Code, jumping or diving from the pier is prohibited.

It is also illegal to carry a surfboard, drive a car, ride a bike or skateboard on the pier.

Despite signs painted on pier rails warning people not to jump, more people used to jump off the pier into the water in the past, Stabenow said.

In the past, he said, people used to jump five or six times a year, usually intoxicated and usually late at night.

"When they need assistance and the waves are hitting them and they're near the pier pilings, it can become a pretty serious rescue," he said.
