Pedestrian and His Dog Struck by Pick-Up Truck at Belmont Intersection

The accident occurred this morning at the intersection of Middle Rd. and Notre Dame Ave.

According to the Belmont Police Department, at approximately 8:50 a.m. today, a 69-year-old San Mateo man and his dog were struck by a 2001 Dodge pick-up truck driven by a 58-year-old Belmont resident at the intersection of Middle Rd. and Notre Dame Ave.

The driver was turning from southbound Notre Dame Ave. onto eastbound Middle Rd.

The pedestrian was treated at the scene by Belmont Fire Department paramedics and transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  The man’s dog, a female pit-bull mix, was transported by family members to an area veterinary hospital where it later succumbed to its injuries.

The pedestrian and his dog were in a marked crosswalk when they were struck.  While the cause of the collision is still under investigation, speed does not appear to be a factor.

The Belmont Police Department would like to remind all motorists that it is important to be alert for both pedestrians and bicyclists while on the road.

“This is especially important tonight, as it’s Halloween and numerous children and adults will be out trick-or-treating”, said Belmont Police Chief Don Mattei.

“Daylight savings time ends next week and it will be getting dark earlier in the day, which adds to the reasons to be alert and drive defensively”, Mattei added.

The left hand turn is on to North rd. only. No stop sign at Middle and Notre Dame. Idiots race thru cross walk on way to Central school on Middle, or down to El Camino every morning.

Actually there IS a stop sign on Middle at Notre Dame.

Speed wasn't a factor, but I bet a cell phone was. But then again, many drivers pay no attention to pedestrians, as they're in too much of a hurry to get to their destination.

Please just SLOW DOWN! We all get caught up in our busy lives and think whatever we've got going on is more important than the next person's. A man's best friend was killed here and next time it could be your neighbor or his child! Please save speeding for the major arterials & freeways and pay attention in the hood!! This was a sad and very tragic event for all involved...

This is a dangerous intersection. There needs to be stops signs on Notre Dame, not just Middle.
