Oven Fire at Big Kahuna's Imperial Beach

An employee arrived to work Tuesday morning to find the restaurant full of smoke. Pulled pork left to cook overnight started a grease fire, Imperial Beach fire captain Paul Favor said.

An oven fire broke out at in a shopping center in the 600 block of Palm Avenue Tuesday morning.

Around 10:15 a.m. cook Marx Cadoc said he arrived to find the building engulfed in smoke.

"There was so much smoke you couldn't even see inside," he said.

After calling 911, the Imperial Beach Fire Department responded and San Diego Fire-Rescue and Coronado and Chula Vista fire departments were called to assist.

Pulled pork had been left to cook overnight in the oven, said Imperial Beach fire captail Paul Favor.

Grease from the pork began to set fire in the oven, he said, and spread to the oven's exterior but the fire was contained to that area.

"It was more smoke than fire," Favor said.

Firefighters went on the roof to check for extended damage and confirm the grease fire did not spread to a vent.
