One DUI Arrest at Saturday Night Checkpoint in Imperial Beach

Drivers were stopped between 7:30 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. by deputies looking for drunken drivers and other violations.

Sheriff’s deputies conducted a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint in Imperial Beach on Saturday night, screening more than 1,000 drivers and arresting one for suspicion of DUI, according to the department.

The checkpoint operated from 7:30 p.m. until 2:30 a.m., according to Sgt. Ted Greenawald. Of the 1,291 vehicles that drove through the checkpoint, 1,191 were contacted by deputies checking driver’s licenses and looking for signs of impairment.

Deputies directed 30 vehicles to a secondary-inspection area, where nine drivers were given field sobriety tests, according to Greenawald. In addition to the one driver arrested for suspicion of DUI, two other people were arrested on other charges.

Two vehicles were impounded at the checkpoint and 11 citations were issued for various violations, according to a sheriff’s report.

The checkpoint was part of Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest., a national crackdown led by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. The detail was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the NHTSA.
