One Arrest Made at Friday-Night DUI Checkpoint

Law enforcement agencies are stepping up DUI details as the New Year’s holiday approaches.

Deputies conducting a DUI checkpoint in Imperial Beach Friday night made one DUI arrest and issued 10 citations for driving without a valid license, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The checkpoint operated at the intersection of Palm Avenue and Ninth Street between 8:30 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. Of the 1,154 vehicles that drove through the checkpoint, 1,089 were screened by deputies looking for signs of impairment and checking driver’s licenses, according to Sgt. Laura Spang.

Deputies directed 49 drivers to a secondary inspection area for further evaluation, according to Spang.

Friday night’s checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Questions regarding the checkpoint can be directed to the IB Traffic Unit, (619) 498-2400.

Actually, they got the most action in the last hours of the checkpoint. There are rules about how and where the checkpoints are to be conducted; like Mark says-there must be a way around (but don't be surprised if you find a cop behind you if you do that). And from from past experience, the deputies know that spot has one of the best returns on investment. Before criticizing, you should do your homework.

Exactly what is 'the most action' of one DUI arrest? I love the way they emphasize that it was paid for by a grant from 'fill-in-the-blank'. B.S.! That is still taxpayer money being forked out for MORE overtime for already bloated overtime union cop pay! We the people got exactly zip point shit for ROI on this rolling scam job! A well trained cop can find more DUI's patrolling the streets and highways than these bogus check points net.

IB me, yes a block up when you make a right, there are cops there, that's why I said 2 blocks. Also, please dont post if YOU dont know what your talking about. They have the ability to annouce where a DUI check point will be within certain hours, that can name several locations between those hours and move from location to location or at all. They have options...however, they choose not to use them.

Evidently all drinking drivers in IB are real elusive folks or they are real smart about not drinking & driving. I think 1 DUI Friday out of 1,100 people is pretty noteworthy!

Friday night was miserable weather, even for ducks. I suspect most folks stayed off the roads. I came home around 11:00pm after leaving a friend at the airport. Didnt really notice the checkpoint. Usually by 11th st. traffic is all backed up. No onoe on the road. Maybe they took a cab, it appears they arrest more drunk-walkers here than drivers.
