A 29-year-old man was shot in the head around 1 a.m. Sunday in the 1100 block of Palm Avenue, the sheriff's department said.
After being shot, an off-duty military serviceman helped administer first aid before an ambulance could arrive and bring the man to the hospital.
Witness statements said "they saw four men walking together, one raised their hand, the victim fell and other two took off running," said Sgt. Fran Passalacqua. It did not appear that an altercation took place before the shooting.
The wound did not break the skull and the victim was released later that day.
Passalacqua said the victim was cooperative when deputies to spoke to him in the hospital, but he did not remember what happened.
"The victim said he remembers being at a relative's home and then waking up in the hospital," Passalacqua said.
The San Diego County Sheriff's Department Gang Suppression Unit responded to the incident.
No suspects have been identified, Passalacqua said.
