An Imperial Beach man who allegedly stabbed his former wife repeatedly at her home over the weekend was arrested Monday on suspicion of attempted murder.
Deputies took Jose Ascencio Gomez, 56, into custody at the intersection of Palm Avenue and Ninth Street in Imperial Beach about 11:30 a.m., sheriff's Sgt. Juan Marquez said.
Shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday, Gomez went to his former wife's home in the 600 block of 11th Street in Imperial Beach and asked to use her telephone. During an ensuing argument, Gomez allegedly grabbed a knife from the 56-year- old woman's kitchen and stabbed her five times in the chest before fleeing.
Medics took the victim to a hospital for treatment of wounds that were not believed to be life-threatening.
Gomez was being held without bail in San Diego Central Jail pending arraignment, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
