The Imperial Beach Fire Department and San Diego County Sheriff's Department responded to a suspected fire at an apartment complex in the 100 block of Palm Avenue Thursday around 11:15 a.m.

Residents in the apartment complex were asked to evacuate for about an hour before the cause of the smoke could be determined.

"A dog was playing with the smoke bomb and accidentally punctured it and set it off," said Sergeant Dave Ross. The dog's owners were not home at the time yellow smoke began to billow from the garage.

The Sheriff's Bomb and Arson unit was called in to investigate when unrecognized ammunition was found in the garage, but the smoke bombs and ammunition were both legal, Ross said.
