Update: CHP Opening Bridge Following Closure of More Than 2 Hours

Crash reported at 6:35 p.m., followed by a person threatening to jump, according to the city and CHP. All lanes are open.

Update 10:10 p.m. Thursday with city police info on bridge re-opening. Inbound and outbound lanes are open, and traffic, according to police is flowing, but moderate to heavy. CBS8 reports via Twitter that the individual jumped. Neither Coronado nor San Diego police would comment.

The California Highway Patrol has asked Coronado police to close the bridge at the toll plaza following a wreck at 6:35 p.m., prompting officials to recommend traveling on the Silver Strand.

Initial reports indicated the crash involved three vehicles, but within minutes there was a report that a person was seen leaning over the side of the bridge.

By 6:48 p.m., the CHP noted on its online log that San Diego police, which typically aid when there are potential jumpers on the bridge, had no units to provide assistance in shutting down lanes and “no negotiators” available.

Ten minutes later, the CHP added that a request was being made for a possible “long-term closure.”

As of 8:15 p.m., San Diego police were still working on sending in a negotiating team.

“Sounds like this is gonna draw out for a while,” someone said on the Coronado police band.

The closure affects both sides of the bridge. Message boards on Interstate 5 are advising motorists to use alternate routes.

Coronado police Cmdr. Michael Lawton said there is no backup on Silver Strand Boulevard and that vehicles should head there to make their way out of Coronado rather than waiting on 4th Street.

“We're recommending everybody at this point take the Strand,” he said.

Multiple CHP units are on scene and the Harbor Patrol is aiding with units on the bridge and below the span, according to the log.

Lawton had no report on injuries on the bridge, but said Coronado fire and paramedic units were not called to the scene.

He said the closure, based on CHP's calls for resources, could be two hours or more. Navy Region Southwest also has been informed of the closure, he added.
